Jolt, the dog that became a fan favorite as Lucky the Pizza Dog on Hawkeye in 2021, has a new friend: Slate, who plays Cosmo the Space Dog in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Jolt’s official Instagram account, which has garnered thousands of followers by sharing behind-the-scenes photos of his role. Slate shared the role of Cosmo with actor Maria Bakalova, who voices the character and provides some additional motion capture. “Having the chance to join the Marvel family, and especially my first love in the MCU, the Guardians of the Galaxy, was a dream come true,” he said of taking on the role.

Cosmo the Space Dog made his first cameo appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. guards the film is a piece in the collector’s museum in Knowhere. He was later seen licking the Collector’s face in the post-credits scene, both of whom survived the explosion at the museum.
Director James Gunn has explained why Cosmo is a female in the MCU, despite being a male dog in the comics. The character’s origin was a dog that somehow evolved and gained telepathic powers, being launched into space as part of the Soviet experiments of the 1960s. It was created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning and was originally Nova volume 4 #8 (January 2008). Since the original Cosmo referred to Laika, an actual Soviet space dog, Gunn said that by changing the character’s gender, she “just goes back to the original source material.”
While Cosmo required some additional motion capture work, it only required the visual effects team to digitally remove one eye to turn Jolt into Lucky. Director Rhys Thomas shared in an interview that he initially thought a real dog would cause too much trouble for the shoot, but was surprised by Jolt’s skill. “It was great. I was totally skeptical and there was footage of a CG dog. Really, I can’t think of a moment when we wasted time because of Jolt.
