God of War Ragnarok‘s Unlocking the Mask episode, surprisingly, involves Atreus finishing what he started and putting together the cue pieces. This is the final episode of Ragnarok’s Atreus solo plot. It will take you to the cold realm of Niflheim. But before that happens, you’ll have to return to the good old Asgard. Despite Heimdall’s recent death, you may find that your reception in Niflheim is warmer.
As another Atreus episode, you will once again travel on a fairly linear route. However, as with these chapters, there will still be treasures to collect along the way. And since you cannot return to the Atreus parts of these worlds, this will be your only chance to capture them in the wild. Lucky for you, we are here to guide you!
Unlocking the Mask
This quest will begin with a very, very short break in Midgard. You’ll hang out with Fenrir, relax with Angrboda, and then go home. At this point you will return to Asgard. From here, your options will be pretty limited. While you can witness a series of optional interactions before, The only people you can deal with here are between Sif and Thrud. You can even talk to Sif one-on-one if you hang around. For obvious reasons, you won’t have the pleasure of being scolded by Heimdall in the common area. Oh good. Go talk to Odin and he will send you on a mission to Niflheim. But first, you’ll need to get your trusted companion Thor back.
Black Lightning Tavern
You will go to the local tavern with Thrud. Your weapons will be taken from you, and after a short conversation with Thor, you will, predictably, find yourself in a giant fight. The first phase will see you battling against a number of unarmed Einherjars. All his punches are pretty slow, so lots easy to fend off. Hit them with your bow, have Ingrid mow them down, and you’ll be right through them in no time.
When you finish the first batch, you will have a short conversation with Thor and then be taken over by another Einherjar. You will then encounter another group, but this time they will be armed. However, Thrud will join you to balance things out. You’ll battle a wave of these celestial thugs before Thor accidentally throws you to the second floor.
When you go up, you will have to fight three Einherjars. This time there will be no Thrud to help you. However, they are all unarmed, so they are easy to dodge once again. After clearing these three, your arrows will be launched at you. Now, select the Einherjar below. Eventually the ground will collapse and Atreus will be captured by a giant Einherjar. For all intents and purposes, the tavern war is over. You just have to help Thor get out of the tavern and then you will go to Niflheim.
As soon as you arrive in Niflheim, turn 180 degrees, jump to the altar and grab a heavy Hacksilver pouch. Turn left at the altar, go down the hallway, shoot a barrel hanging from the ceiling, grab the Hacksilver, turn right around the corner and open the red chest. Now go back to the main room but hold onto the far left wall. You will climb onto an elevated platform. Here you will find another chest. However, you will have officially cleared this area of all its treasures. Go out on the right side of this area and you will find yourself on a bridge made of ice.
Once you reach the bridge, you will be attacked by a group of Hell-Walkers. There’s nothing you haven’t dealt with a million times already. On the left, you’ll be able to jump onto the raised ledge. There is a chest here. Once you get the chest, jump down and head towards the main road. You will enter a large room. At the other end of the room will be a row of Hell-Walkers that fire projectiles. Take them out with your arrows. After they die, help Thor finish off the rest. All you have to do from here is to remove the mask when you come to the right corner of the arena. Thor will shatter this wall of ice and you will be able to move forward.
You will go down a linear path. Beyond a bucket hanging from the ceiling, there is little to do but to go straight ahead. When you reach an area with a huge ice barrier in the middle, prepare for an ambush. When you get close enough, a Hel-Walker with a giant ax will leap out of that block of ice. Several Nightmares will join the fight. Clear them and push forward. You will fight a shield wielding Hel-Walker as well as another ax wielder. Hook left after you finish them and you will find another treasure chest.
Go to the right corner of the room. Go to the frozen debris wall in the right corner and take off your mask. This will trigger Thor to destroy said wall. Now you will go to an icy cave. A nightmare will have a Hel-Walker, but between Atreus’ excellent stun ability and Thor’s being a force of nature, that won’t even be a barrier. After clearing these guys, you will encounter another group of Nightmares and Hell Wanderers. After cleaning them, release them in the wide open area. It’s time to tinker with a Frost Ancient.
Boss Fight: Ancient Frost
Frost Ancient is essentially the same Ancient Forest you fought in Vanaheim. They have the same rock-throwing projectile and also have a beam-based projectile attack. Also, the only time you can damage him is right before an attack, or when he’s stunned, when his chest is opened. During this battle, you will also fight several Hell-Walkers. Focus most of your attention on hitting the Frost Ancient, but shoot a few heads here and there to weaken normal Hel-Walkers.
The best part about the Forest Ancient boss fight is how subtly it highlights the differences between Kratos and Atreus. When battling this massive golem as Kratos, you need to be quite considerate of your moves, but The greatly improved mobility of Atreus means it can take more risks and escape the path of danger. Similarly, Atreus’ projectile attacks are much faster than Kratos’ ax throws. So, even if you don’t have a fully charged shot, you’ll be able to shoot a few arrows when you see an opening.
On the other side of the coin, however, it is much easier to stun the Frost Ancient, while Atreus deals significantly less damage to the susceptible rock pile. Fortunately, you are not alone. Tor is with you. And do you know? The big man hits hard. Well, what you want to do is stun Frost Ancient while Thor is nearby, and after doing that, kill all the enemies Thor is currently fighting. This will cause Thor to fire a shot or two at the massive creature. A handful of Thor’s attacks is enough for this boss to become Frost Ancient History.
Assembling Mask Parts
Now meet Thor in the right corner of the map and remove the mask. Thor will break an irrelevant wall for fun. In this side area, there are one or two stray Hel-Walkers you need to kill. Once you’ve done that, take the chest on your left. Once you’ve done that, look for the nearby drop. Go down and you will get a red chest. Once you have that chest, jump back and head back to the main road. Take off your mask again and Thor will break through the right wall.
Go down the main road. You can take out the Hell-Walker on your right. A nearby corpse has some Hacksilver to reward you. Now head back to the main road and you will fight a few Hell-Walkers and a few Nightmares. After clearing them, proceed along the right wall and open the chest nearby. Now go to the edge of the cliff and take off your mask. All that remains from here is to sit back and watch the cutscenes unfold. You will have completed the Unmasking part of the game.
