Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Writer-director James Gunn recently announced that the upcoming indie series is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe project without a villain.
Gunn confirmed this important detail in an interview with Variety. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Specialoverlapping footage. “It was really easy [to shoot both projects at once] and it was easy from start to finish and that was great because volume 3 actually very emotional,” he said. “We shot both at the same time, so the shot volume 3 it was hard to go on for a few days and then it was fun to take a day off to shoot this show. Because the risks in this regard were low. It was just stupid. The great thing about this is that there are no villains in this. There’s never been a Marvel story I can remember without some kind of villain.”
The villain-free approach of the festival-themed Marvel Studios Special Presentation certainly didn’t spoil its critical reception. Early Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special It’s overwhelmingly positive, with critics praising its emotional tone and callbacks to established Christmas storytelling tropes. At least one reviewer praised Mantis’ development and actor Pom Klementieff’s performance in the role, while Kevin Bacon’s turn as a fictionalized version of himself was also warmly received.

Gunn has previously confirmed that the special will continue the series’ tradition of “Awesome Mix” and will feature his own curated compilation playlist of Yuletide-themed tunes. The producer also announced Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special It would include an original Christmas carol that he shared on Twitter before the one-shot show aired. The track is called “I Don’t Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime Is Here)” and is performed by alternative country band Old 97’s.
Gunn co-wrote the song with Old 97 lead vocalist Rhett Miller and said filming the band’s performance was among the “most fun” jobs he’s ever had on set. Gunn also said in an earlier interview Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special It was born out of gibberish on set, as he first came up with the idea as a joke while filming. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. “We all laughed and thought it was going to be great… and then they wrote it down for like three days,” he said.
