In a game full of stickmen, Shadows Over Loathing has plenty of extra space for items and gear. You never know which little activity or interaction will earn you a brand new hat or weapon. Although you only have three basic stats and classes, the range of weapons is so wide that it’s hard to keep track of them all.
Most make use of one of the stats that usually affects what kind of damage they do. However, no matter how you build your character, some weapons are generally powerful and should be considered able to carry you through most of the adventure.
8/8 Blue Officer’s Gun
While RPGs have been generous with how often they throw items and weapon shops at you, Shadows Over Loathing is a little looser. This is because you can find loads of items in a few minutes, but the start area offers options.
A Military Surplus shop is open from the start and sells a variety of War Items and weapons. This includes the Blue Officer Firearm available for a pretty penny. If you have a strong Moxie build, this weapon can take you through many tough battles.
7/8 Newest Toilet Brush
-
Adds Muscle + 6 Fragrances, 3 Poisons
A common theme in the Loathing series is how they combine unhygienic places and objects like toilets. There are many bathrooms scattered throughout Shadows Over Loathing that are worth visiting to get potential First Aid items and XP (no kidding) for cleaning the toilet.
Also a chance to acquire the New Fangled Toilet Brush, a powerful melee weapon. It pulls from your muscle and turns it into enhanced Smell damage. This is one of the more reliable types of damage, and if that’s not enough, it also poisons the enemy for three points.
6/8 Second Smallest Violin in the World
With one of the prominent instruments, it will become very clear that almost anything can be a weapon in this game. There’s a huge focus on music and you’ll be able to pick up instruments to use in battle.
Once you have collected the World’s Smallest Violin, you will be able to exchange it for the World’s Second Smallest Violin by giving it to a musical doll. Moxie is a quality that often includes flexibility and agility, so it is suitable for ranged weapons such as the violin. A simple but solid damage boost that can devastate many enemies.
5/8 Frog Fork
-
Mystic + 5 Physical, Heals 3
Once you arrive at Big Moist, you will need to explore this huge marshland and deal with all the Gatormen living in it. As you progress through the story in search of your friend, you’ll visit several places filled to the brim with Gatormen.
By exploring their huts, you’ll find a shack with rusty tools and implements, including the Froggin’ Fork. As a mystic-enhanced weapon, it’s perfect for boosting the attack power of anyone going into a magical build. Also some HP healing per attack isn’t too shabby either.
4/8 Lawn mower
-
Adds Mysticism + 6 Physical, 5 Bleeds
Following the story of Shadows Over Loathing will take you to many surreal and spooky places, some of which exist in your own mind. Each episode ends with a strange dream sequence that you can try to interpret if you wish, but most importantly, these sequences give you items you can take to the waking world.
In one of the last dreams, you will be tasked with building a Lawnmower to defend yourself. Do it successfully and you will win for yourself. It is one of the most powerful Mystical weapons, further strengthened by the Bleeding debuff it inflicts.
3/8 Tender Hammer
-
Reduces Muscle + 5 Physical, Target Muscle by 3
It’s a kind of side quest, the central area where your room is located on a street full of empty shop windows. At the end of each chapter, you will be asked to choose a store to occupy one of the available stores. Although there is already a Military Surplus shop, you can give one of the buildings to a gun shop run by a friendly Viking.
You will be able to purchase the Tenderizing Hammer after talking to him. It has decent damage powered by Muscle, but reducing enemy Muscle becomes valuable as enemies will quickly become physically stronger.
2/8 Crescent Wand
-
Mysticism + 6 Sleaze, Decreases Target Attributes by 1
Everything in this game, including tools, can be a magical weapon. Whether your character is mechanically intelligent, they will still be able to use whatever tools they have against their enemies. By searching for tool boxes and tool chests scattered throughout the various areas, you will eventually find the Crescent Staff.
Transforming into a wrench, this crescent staff increases Mystic damage with Sleaze, another reliable basic damage type as the game progresses. It also saves valuable AP on lowering enemy stats, as it reduces all by one point per attack.
1/8 Precious Hunting Knife
-
Finally 5 Muscles
Most weapons are pretty consistent with their formula: they use one of the primary attributes, add additional damage (maybe basic), and have a chance to cause an additional effect. However, there are some weapons that do not fit the formula and are not easy to find.
One of the longer side quests featuring Leathers Brothers gives you a chance to get the Precious Hunting Knife before it gets lost. It can focus on Muscle, but it’s one of the most damaging weapons in the game. It just takes patience and can be raised even higher by using turns to raise your muscle.
